Leaking water heater: what to do before the plumber arrives
Water pooling under your water heater? Shut off the power and water, limit the damage and get the right details ready for the plumber. A step-by-step guide.
Water under your water heater is never something to ignore. A few simple steps will limit the damage while you wait for a pro.
1. Cut the power
- Electric water heater: switch off its dedicated breaker at the panel.
- Gas water heater: turn the gas valve to off, following the manufacturer's instructions.
Never touch an electrical appliance while standing in water.
2. Close the cold water supply
The valve is usually on the inlet pipe at the top of the tank. Turn it clockwise.
3. Find where it's leaking
Look without taking anything apart:
- the fittings at the top of the tank;
- the relief valve and its discharge pipe;
- the bottom of the tank.
A leak at the bottom of the tank often means the unit is at the end of its life.
4. Get ready for the visit
Take photos of the rating plate (brand, year, capacity) and of the leak. In the BeeLibli app, those photos help you get a price range before anyone shows up.
